Canon Imageclass MF6590 stuck on download standby

I have a Canon Imageclass MF6590 stuck on "download standby." I have been having this issue for a while. I gave up on it for a couple of years. Before I bring it to the electronics recycler, I thought I would try here. Anyone have a solution?

Common issue on this Canon engine.

You need to reflash the firmware.

Do I need to have a firmware update tool for that? Canon does not seem to provide one for the MF6500 series.

Canon also doesn't provide firmware updates on their support site.
