    Paper Shredders recomendation

    Hello all.

I'm shopping for a paper shredder for my current company. I have some experience with them, but not much.

Is there something I should look for? I'm looking for a cheap-ish low volume shredder that's easy on jam removal (if there's such a thing). The one we have actually jams every other day and I have to remove all the screws and covers to makle it work again.

You just need to empty that bag in the cabinet below the shredder #justkidding

Maybe you're not wrong - I'm not near the machine, and they only call me when it jams

I believe that simply buying a particle shredder instead of a paper strip one will decrease the jams as the paper has less tendency to pile up to the shredder.

Particles offer a higher security standard and make a better use of the space in the bag (=bag last longer)but, well, "it's full when it's full" and the particles will end up inside the shredder causing issues on sensors, actuators.

Most isses are related to dirt and paper dust, laggy actuators and blunt cutting blades/lack of lubrication can cause overload jams, like if you shredder to many sheets at once.

Normally Ideal or Rexel shredders are good, both have parts available, they both have a 2 year warranty, out of the 2, i prefer to work on Ideal, as there are more parts available, and they have proper parts manuals. Cross cut (particle) are better. Don't go for Personal shredders, they won't be covered under warranty in an office environment. Avoid Fellowes, you can't seem to be able to get spares. Whatever you go for, it is important to oil the blades regularly, using either shredder oil, or sheets, or buy a self oiling model. it is also very important to have them serviced regularly, especially if you forget to oil them, as they'll get a build up of paper dust.

I sell Dahle shredders to my customers. German made blades that don't use oil. They cost more up front but will last 3x's longer than most on the market.

I forgot about Dahle, I've worked on a few, they appear to be a good make.

Years ago I had to work on a German made shredder at the Bakersfield FBI office. First time out it was because of excessive accumulation of shredder confetti everywhere that it shouldn't be. But let me tell you, those cutter blades are not indestructible. I got called out because it was jammed and I found a pair of scissors jammed in the blades. They ended up ordering a new shredder through GSA.To repair it required a new set of blades, 3 months to get from Germany at a cost to me of over $900. They were only allowed $800 local purchase for repair.
