    Toshiba Re-Rite Question

Have a question on Toshiba Re-Rite program. What exactly is it ? Is it a program that runs on the server that captures the scan then converts it into a searchable word or other documents. Its not something loaded on the machine per say (the machine does not need a OCR app loaded on to it)? I'm not a Toshiba guy and the third party sales guy that sold Kyocera to replace the Toshiba did not do his job very well and now the customer is complaining the scan documents are not converting to word correctly and we have tried several Kyocera options but they have there flaws. Thanks for an help.

    Re: Toshiba Re-Rite Question

"Have a question on Toshiba Re-Rite program. What exactly is it ? Is it a program that runs on the server that captures the scan then converts it into a searchable word or other documents". Yes, ReRite is not installed on the copier.

Abbyy FineReader Pro was the core OCR technology. I doubt that any copier's built in OCR technology in 2019 can compete with the 98% accuracy of this software.

"Its not something loaded on the machine per say (the machine does not need a OCR app loaded on to it)?" Correct.

"I'm not a Toshiba guy and the third party sales guy that sold Kyocera to replace the Toshiba did not do his job very well and now the customer is complaining the scan documents are not converting to word correctly and we have tried several Kyocera options but they have their flaws."

To get the same quality of OCR scan, the customer needs to buy a full version of Abbyy FineReader Pro. Approx $300.00 per workstation. 30 day trial available. ABBYY - A Global Leader in Content IQ for the Enterprise .

ReRite was discontinued approx three years ago. It did require some skill to install and maintain. ReRite worked well, processing documents both accurately and quickly as it used the processing power of the PC it was installed on. ReRite is from an era in copier technology before multi-core processors were available.

In 2019, Toshiba copiers use Dual core processors where the OCR function is embedded in the copier's operating system. While one core processes copier tasks, the other core can simultaneously process OCR tasks with no negative impact to the copier's performance. While performance is good with more accurate OCR conversions than many competitors, it still does not match the accuracy of Abbyy FineReader, nor should it be expected to.

Built in 2019 OCR technology is mostly to satisfy the relatively easy industry common specification of creating Searchable PDFs. Accurately converting paper documents to DOC or DOCX Word formats is a much higher challenge that requires many lines of software code that copier vendors cannot keep up with or likely fit within the confines of a copier.

In a multi page Word document, the difference in a few % points of OCR accuracy is the difference between a few minutes to proof a converted Word document and many minutes.

The customer might be better served to consider FineReader Server on a subscription model or Software As a Service (SAAS).

The equally effective industry leading alternative to Abbyy is OmniPage Pro.

    Re: Toshiba Re-Rite Question

The best bet is an OCR conversion software on a computer. The problem with MFP based OCR is that CPU of the MFP is dedicated mainly to running the MFP. OCR conversion can take minutes per page. I have seen large documents take as much as 30 minutes or more. Computer based OCR software can do the same conversion in 2 or 3 minutes or less.

    Re: Toshiba Re-Rite Question

Toshiba Re-Rite is not sold anymore as Toshiba have moved to "Capture and Store", which is Toshiba's version of "Scanshare"

Capture and Store(Scanshare) is a very powerful all-in-one document management solution, and i suggest checking it out. By default it uses Omnipage for its OCR, however you can purchase an abbyy licence for greater recognition.

The new eBN Toshiba's have the ability to load a licence directly to the MFD and use its own hardware to do the OCR while scanning to email/file for example OR look into the Kodo Apps, in particular the ScanShare+ app, which includes basic OCR within the app itself.

Again, like it has been said, OCR is a demanding job on any hardware and having a computer handle the task, instead of the MFD, will always yield better results.
