We haven't seen issue yet with a few SMR drives we have out, but they are in RAID arrays, either RAID 6 or 10, so there is some resiliency if a drive fails. We're keeping an eye on them for NAS use, but we have always gone with branded drives for servers as opposed to general drives.

thanks for the response... based one what the guy is saying in the video... if a drive fails in raid... it could take a day and a half for recovery vs conventional drives which would take a couple of hours...

so be advised... if recovery takes a long time... its the smr hard drive working normally... hence the lawsuit...

Any one with thoughts on the advisability of SMR drives in devices such as TiVo DVRs?

In a single disk scenario like that, you may not notice any real difference. The issue comes more in RAID or large storage arrays.
