Install Linux, customize the desktop manager to your hearts content and problem solved.
Currently I like Mint with the default Cinnamon setup.
There's always one... LOL
I've got a mix of Linux and Windows systems. The operating system is a tool, and it comes down to the right tool for the right job.
Mint and Ubuntu are a good starting point, especially since drivers are much easier to install than some of the other distributions.

Don't care what this list says, Vista was by far the worst. I had a work laptop with Vista and every 3 months or so, the SHIFT keys would stop functioning. A fresh install cleared it right up though....ugh. After the second install, I learned how to remap the keyboard layout.
Failing to plan is planning to fail!!!
Vista and Windows 8 were pretty rough. Vista's real issue was the fact that it was an OS really made for 64-bit and modern hardware instead of the XP rated machines and components that were being released with it installed early on. The only reason for 7 having a better reputation is that the OEMs finally caught up with the kind of hardware needed. If you even look at the build number for 7, it's just Service Pack 3 for Vista.
8 was just a step towards touch, but too far away from the traditional layout for most people. The overall OS was pretty solid, slap a true Start menu on it and it's just an iteration of Windows 10.
