Question Windows 11 on old hardware and printing problems

I hope it's the right section of the forum, I wouldn't want to go wrong.

The first thing I want to put you in a situation:
    - Customer in maintenance contract
    - Multifunction device that works smoothly
    - The client's laptop was upgraded from W10 to a W11 recently
    - Problems with printing:
    1º Slowness in printing
2º It stays in the print queue (on the laptop, not on the machine) indicating an error. If you leave a time (10 minutes) you end up printing
3º The network is disconnected (wifi and ethernet) and does not detect that the printer is online.
4º It fails randomly, when it tries to scan.

Does anyone else do you think something similar with "old" equipment, which has been upgraded to W11?

And none of this happened when the user had Windows 10.

Write him a bill and tell them to go back to win 10. How old is the MFP? Maybe update firmware.

Re: Windows 11 on old hardware and printing problems

The MFP already has its years, with its typical things, an MPC3001, but ignoring that, the device has never presented these problems. Even FTP scanning fails, randomly...
I am clear that it is the fault of the W11, but I needed to compare / contrast if in computers "with old hardware" that have been working correctly with MFP in W10, when upgrading to W11 similar things are also happening to them.

More than anything, have some proof to justify the client a downgrade to W10.

When Windows 11 went in, did it update the print queues with WSD ports? Is SMB1 enabled on the laptop / PC?

It was the first thing I checked, I'm very tired and pissed off with that shit from Microsoft's WSD Port.
I disable it to all machines in the IP4 configuration.

It is also activated, but every time you restart the system it is deactivated again, so it is configured by FTP.
And read that it may be related to the Firewall, apparently they put some restriction and can generate problems with the printers.

So it has been possible to investigate in different specialized portals, the problem is usually more recurrent in Laptops / PC that have made the migration from W10 to W11. But it is not usual or there are not many cases that have occurred, on PCs that did Clean Installation (new, with formatting and partitioning) of Windows 11.

Have you reinstalled the proper driver? Does the driver support the running OS?

You can always explain to the customer in simple terms, something like:

So you see that printing and all other functions work just fine with Windows 10. Now Windows 11 is a new Programm, many Programs still need adjustments from the manufacturs to be able to work on the new OS. Since your printer, dear Customer, is already in a good age, the manufactur can't provide you with updates forever. The last time the Firmware and Drivers were updated, was when Windows 10 came out.

This always makes them somewhat understood.
I dont think your Problems are Windows 11 Issues tho.
Slow Printing is often caused by eco mode being activated r improper Printer Driver.
Sometime there is no rule in the firewall.
SMB v1 is not supported with Windows 11 anymore as far as i know.
For pure testing, you could deactivate any antivirus and local firewall rule on your clients PC. This is no good Solution tho.

Specific Pcl6 drivers have not been updated since 2014. And I only have to install the "Universals", which I hate with all my being. I will try them, and cross my fingers.

When the device prints it is not slow, it goes at its speed (good speed of an MPC3001), I was referring more to the delay that is taken by the failures that are generated in the print queue.
About the firewall, is what I read in press articles about this situation.
Yes, you can activate the SMB V1, but it is what I said before, when you restart the system, it is disabled again, so configure the FTP service, but it does the same, it is disabled and stops working.

I suggest install a simple PCL 6 Driver. Static IP Port. Turn off the tab in the OS "Let Windows Manage the Printers". In the Web Interface de-Select the WSD port setting. Make sure your Firmware for the Copier is up to date.
What Web Browser is Being used? Is the Protocol RAW or LPR? Under the security tab are All functions allowed to manage prints and the Printer ? Are they Wireless or hardwired ?

Just because it has not been updated does not mean it shouldn't it shouldn't be used. It just means that Ricoh product specialists have not received any printing complaints requiring an update. Most likely W11 overwrote one of the supporting dll files. Delete the existing driver and reinstall either the PCL6 v1.5.0.0 driver or the PCL5c v1.2.0.0 driver.

As for "Universal" drivers, was to support universal spooled printers. In order to spool printer it was required that all spooled printers used the same driver. Universal were created to allow different make and model of printers to appear to be using the same driver. That also meant one of those printers did not have a peripheral such as a finished or a paper bank, that peripheral was not usable on any of the printers.

The V4 drivers support Microsoft POC V4 architecture. All I have to say about V4 architecture is Run Forrest Gump run.

In terms of security both SMB1 and FTP are a dead end. Many environments I deal with won't even allow an FTP server because of the lack of any security. Both are slowly being taken out of Windows as well. Newer builds of Windows 11 won't even include the binaries for SMB1.

It's 2022: if you have a device that still needs a forty year old protocol, it's time to let it go.
