    for faxes is it better to use Cat5 cables terminated to RJ11 as its insulated or best to use phone cables with ferrite core?

    All cable is insulated unless you are buying bare wire. I think you mean shielded. Cat5 is only shielded if you purchased shielded Cat5 cable. Shielded Cat3, twisted pair telephone cable, is also available. The difference between Cat5 and Cat3 is the number of twists per inch and that Cat5 is usually a heavier gauge conductor. The greater twists per inch makes Cat5 less susceptible to RF interference. Even so it is recommended that you not run cable that is not shielded parallel to and with 3 feet of electrical wiring that is not in conduits.

    Most contractors when pulling wire for new construction will pull Cat5 for everything. The quantity price break they get that way makes it less expensive.
