    old 4100mfp new question

i love these old printers since they usually work so well and are cheap to operate.

right now the power supply for the scanner is starting to fail and i am wondering if anyone knows how to disable the scanner and just use it as a printer.

would i have to get a 4100 formatter?

    thanks for any ideas.

I can't speak for those older models, but, in the more recent ones if the scanner fails it still has the print functionality. You could just disconnect the cable from the SCB to the formatter & see what happens.

It would probably work just as a print only device if the scanner PSU died. I may have worked on one 4100 mfp, maybe not.

It looks like, though, there are four SMD caps on the output side of the supply that may have the capacitor plague. If your feeling inclined to some bench time, take a look at those caps and see if they've spilled their guts.

Might be easier just to replace with a used 4100 printer. Those things were a dime a dozen to pick up for the longest time cause they had so many out there. I've still got a few in the field working, I run them until they die and some just won't lol. Shouldn't be hard to find some laying around at a printer shop, they'll practically give them away.

    thanks for the thought.

i once tried to change out the scanner power supply on a 4100mfp but then could not get the belts right and just gave up.
what i did for now is change the toner so the display light goes off.
i noticed that the machine started making scanner noises when the toner went low and the screen said toner low and the display light stayed on.

my end game will be to get a 4100 formatter since that is easy to change.
    hoping that will work.

these machines are monsters to move - i think they outlast navy battleships.

My suggestion is to buy a 4250, you can get those for practically nothing.
4250's are way better that a 4100. Just sayin, Good luck

    Re: old 4100mfp new question

update on my 4100mfp to 4100 conversion.

i got a 4100 formatter board and tried it with the mfp rom but no go.
    then i got the 4100 rom and i got a 68 error.
so i removed the hard drive and the sucker printed.
i then reinstalled the hard drive and it also worked,
no control panel but the beast lives again.
500 sheet trays and 10k toner cartridges.
    gotta love these old battleships.

for copying i will just have to use my scanner and then print.
    not a bad tradeoff.
    all for about $33.
    plus the scanner of course.
