USB Firmware issues...

Hey guys... trying to load F/W onto my bizhubs in my shop and some of the newer USB sticks won't allow the machines to boot into f/w update mode...??? They'll load F/W just fine if I use some of the older sticks I have, so what's the secret (if there is one) to making the newer USB sticks "bootable"? I read a few articles that seem to know what this is, but can't seem to get a straight answer? Instead of going into F/W update mode, the machine boots up as normal, which it doesn't do with the older sticks...

most USB firmware upgrades require:

format: FAT32
size of thumbdrive: no more than 2gb

some of the 4gb thumbs do work.

stick with good brands.. sandisk has always been my goto

As Phil said, no larger than 4gb. Although I used to use a Staples brand Relay 8gb thumb drive that worked just fine. So the brand matters. Stick with Sandisk, Kingston etc

OK, well I'm aware that some systems/machines require a smaller stick, so I have been using 1gb or smaller for a while now. The only time I go over that is if the file is simply too large for the stick. And I've formatted them in each FAT and FAT32, nothing makes a difference. Same computer and F/W can be loaded with an older drive, so I'm wondering, could this have something to do with the newer drives (maybe) being 3.0 and not downwards compatible or something?

NEVER use UBS 3.0.. even some 2.0 don't always work in some systems.. I had Xerox play with 2.0 (6605) but the olders DO NOT!

pick your drive carefully. you might have to try several to find oe that jives well with THAT model.

My logical conclusion (maybe not right) is that bios on the machine board does not recognize all usb sticks like long ago when we use windows xp and it does not recognize almost no hardware without installing drivers for specific device.
Thats because windows xp does not have drivers integrated and now windows 10 for example have almost everything integrated and recognize almost all that you plug in.
That is system developer choice.
KM integrated maybe few most used drivers to save memory space and save time to include all usb brands on the market because there is no need for this in real life.
I am not IT specialist and i am maybe totaly wrong about this but never been interested too much about this problem because i always have few working usb sticks and i dont care for reason why all usb sticks are not working.

the i sereies needs a 3.1 jetflash. thats what works best. i have used 8gb and 16 gb on all others . never been a problem for me. i have even used a 64gb. in the earlier series they said not to use more then 2 or 4 gb. mostly due to the voltage draw. but they changed that

USB thumb drive does not work with 4,4e,8,8e or i Series

Personally I purchased and use recommended TRANSCEND 16GB JetFlash 700 USB 3.1 Flash Drive (TS16GJF700) without any issue on newer models 7, 8 and i-series.

My main F/W install USB stick is a Mushkin 32GB USB 3.0 that I've use for years without issue. Now that all the newer machines just require a folder on the drive vs. a crap-ton of files on the root, I can put all the latest machines F/W and movie data on one drive. Of course before that there were numerous smaller thumb drives that worked without issue as well and I still use those for the older 4 and 4e machines when I need to do a F/W update or install because of a failed board.

When we started having issues with some drives, we STOPPED using Windows to format any of the drives. We now use rufus to format the drives and have had no issues since formatting with that cool little open source program. A guy I work with just got back from school a few weeks ago and the consensus was NEVER use Windows to format a thumb drive for F/W installs, although that's the way we did it for many years without issue. My guess is the newer machines are a bit more picky in the formatting of the F/W drive.
