Yes black not black but 70 bucks vs 16 in a mono machine worked for us and I only had to change 1 dev unit in 2 years with about 300 machines.
Thats 500.00 saving for every 10 toners
Oem toner is always better but I wasn't paying the bills
Fortunately I got a job with Xerox after that and later with the largest independent dealer in the US.
I would really make the decision based on how long you intend to keep running the machine. In the long run generic will likely give more issues. But if they are basically ready to replace the thing anyways one last run on sub-par consumables probably won't be the end of the world.
Damn, I did not think about the amount of toner you get when you buy a new printer..
Naive me though it would include a full toner.. did not see anything regarding amount of toner in the product page.. do they disclose how much % toner there actually is in a new printer?
And maybe trying for the generic toner and seeing how long it lasts, and then opting to buy a new one would be most ideal for me.
Some just don't get it. Had a FS-3640mfp in a doctor's office. If you calculate the cpp, it's under .01 with OEM toners...next to nothing to run. The doctor kept on buying generic toners, we were constantly changing developing units, and fusers because the rollers were coated in toner that was baked on, by the time you added new developing units and labor they far exceeded .01 cpp, it was more like .25+ cpp. After the doctor blaming our company for his stupidity, we no longer will service his equipment because of their refusal to use OEM toners and all the problems it has created.
We also pick up business from " the largest independent" copier dealer because of all the generic toners they use and all the problems it creates in their machines, background, failed developing units, premature failure of drum units, etc. These accounts will call us for a second opinion because there sales person is telling them they need a new machine, we simply point out that their dealer is using generic toners and that is the reason they are experiencing issues. Once the client realizes they are paying an "arm and a leg" for generic toners and subpar service, they will switch to us. In the long run for lower TCO, generic toners and parts, will cost you MORE to run your equipment EVERY-TIME! Let me repeat myself....EVERY-TIME!

I've never seen it disclosed either. Just a tip of the trade manufacturers fail to mention I guess, but yeah most if not all printers only come with 30-50% of a full toner out of the box.
Edit- Rok, it really is less about how far a generic will get you and more about how quickly it is likely to cause other issues in the machine. Or quality of prints, which might not matter for a lot of random forms etc but if you're printing something that needs to have good image quality generic will likely let you down.
I think this ad says it all.. about oil AND TONER!
Fram Oil Filter 'Junkyard' Commercial (1977) - YouTube
I'm gonna say something that's not gonna be popular with some but it's true nonetheless. But I need to cover something first.
1. I used to be in the toner business. We rebuilt HP, Dell, Lexmark and all the major brand cartridges. Using a compatible toner does NOT void your warranty despite what you may have heard. This went all the way to the Supreme Court and Static Control Inc. (a toner manufacturer) won a major case and the court ruled that an OEM can't legally void the warranty simply because a consumer chose to use a compatible. They went on to say it would be akin to FORD or GM voiding your warranty because you didn't use their gas or oil. So don't buy that bullshit. It's not true.
2. While it's true there are terrible compatible toners, it's also true there are very good compatibles. In fact, I've seen some that are BETTER than OEM's.
Static Control is the leading company when it comes to manufacturing compatible toner., They are based in the USA in North Carolina. People off the street can't buy from them. You must be in the industry and prove that you're a reseller. End users need not apply.
MEDIA SCIENCE is another high quality company when it comes to compatibles.
In the end, I would advise to test out the toners in your own machine before selling to your customers.
And remember, OEMS will always tell you that all compatibles are crap because, of course, they want you to buy their toner.
EDIT: If it's proven that a compatible did indeed damage the machine, your warranty can be VOIDED.
