KM-5551ci going tap tap tap tap tap tap ...

I thought that this one was interesting. The customer says it taps rapidly, not all the time. I did eventually get it to tap in U030 > FEED. Then it wouldn't stop, and it was really LOUD tapping.

The previous tech had cleaned the exit assy, and replaced the fuser and primary transfer belt unit. And the sound seems to come from the right door front, near the fuser. I've heard this sound quietly tapping on other machines before, but noone has ever pointed it out for me to address, nor was it ever that loud.

I looked at the exit, duplexer, registration, the new fuser and transfer belt, and the black drum and developing units. Naturally you can't actually see anything with the doors closed. Eventually I found my way around to the toner hopper. With the front door open (and the door keyed) it seemed louder, and even louder yet with the connector door opened. When I reached into the opening I could feel the tapping on the front transfer rail at the right front transfer bearing. There is a saddle there where the transfer bearing seats, and a spring loaded lever to hold that bearing into the seat.

My guess is that there is lateral motion of the facing roller, maybe as a result of the helical drive gears on that roller. Or maybe the facing roller is rising up in the saddle and dropping ... one tap per cycle.

On a hunch, I greased up the helical gears, and the front transfer bearing, and it quieted right down. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Is that the door for the waste toner connector?

Nope. It's the door to access the hopper connector, with the black mylar sheet inside. My photos rotate on me. =^..^=

You're right. I found this very interesting. Mostly I found your troubleshooting method interesting. Keep 'em coming.

I've had the same thing happen. It started after a tech did the maint kit, including new primary belt. I thought it was a bad belt, so I replaced it.
It went away for a while, then came back. I ended up replacing the that black plastic rail that the primary belt sits on, and it never came back.
I assumed something happened when the belt seated and snapped down.
    Hope that helps !

That was going to be the next step. I've had to change a rear rail on a Saturn, and it wasn't much fun. I don't expect that this one would be either. =^..^=
