Usally the error message will tell you.

Set the fax to auto reduce paper size to letter.

Yes it's option in the fax menu and should be done on fax setup on all machines.

If you had looked at the error message the first time the customer would not have been inconvenienced
by a Tech not knowing how the machine works.

Paper size or type can produce an error.

    Anyone ?

PS - I also checked the rear paper guide on tray 1 to make sure that it wasn't broken. It was fine.
It happens. Enduser change settings of paper type and it works exactly as they changed paper size - machine will be fooled. Worst cases with Admin agreement I had to lock enduser right to change paper size and type.

Fax is defaulted to print onto Plain paper type. You CAN change the media type for facsimilie to Bond, or anything else you like.

Like any print job, you must MATCH both paper size AND units, and media type.

    It's a mismatch if:
    the paper size doesn't match
the measurement units don't match (metric/inch)
the media type does not match.

The difference between printing and facsimile, is that printing can auto select a tray hard set to LTR, but a fax cannot.

Now don't forget to check: One or more of your endusers has defaulted his/her print driver(s) to Bond media type. Tomorrow (or this afternoon) they'll call to bitch that they can't print anymore. The message will be "Load LTR Bond to the multipurpose tray."
    =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

It sounds simple after you put it that way, but it wasn't so simple when I was trying to figure it out this morning. Thanks, man.

After blackcat explained exactly how it works, I think you're right, tsb. The customer must have been jacking around with the paper settings. That's the only logical explanation.

Re: 3551ci - a print error has occurred, add paper to tray 1

    Funny story:
A decade ago we placed 60 or 70 bizhub 950's in a school district. Basically they were good machines, but the folks that wrote the print driver screwed us.

When you looked at your print driver preferences, and selected paper size, the first size at the top of the list is 8 1/2" x 11" W. That list runs down off of the screen. Somewhere into the second screen at the very bottom of the list you see "US LETTER". A lot of our endusers thought: " ... I don't see Letter, but here is 8 1/2" x 11" (W). That's the same thing!"

Well, it's not the same thing. 8 1/2" x 11" W is 286mm x 223mm, or 7mm larger in both dimensions: not a paper size match. So somebody figures out: "Hey! I can just fix the tray size on the machine! Here it is, 8 1/2" x 11" W!"

Now the other 200 users (of 201) cannot get a paper size match, but that one person CAN print. And the difference in size is not enough to jam the machine.

To me, that meant that on EVERY service call on all 60 or 70 machines, I had to examine what media was in the tray, and set it to the correct size, on (5) trays. Guaranteed, two or more were set to a wide paper size.

... and all because the American print driver listed the single most common US size dead last, off the screen. =^..^=
