oki c9800 black toner smear

This is an old printer but its only done about 10,000 prints. There's a problem at the moment with black toner smear across the pages. I opened up the drum and toner can be seen stuck to the charger roller as in the pic. Is this most likely going to be fixed by a new image unit (before going and buying one), or is it more likely to be a voltage problem or alike?

well how many pages on drum?

is it an OEM Genuine OKI drum?

OEM Genuine Toner?

if you can get the PCR out of the drum:

1) clean with IPA and rinse in water.
2) coat the roller w. NUFinish car polish.. let dry.. buff with soft lint free cloth
3) inspect for more contamination or bumps/tears or other surface defects.
4) if damaged (excluding buildup) toss the roller no good **unless you have another one drum is trash)
5) if you still see toner build up repeat #2 until clean

Replace and test. ** I have used this trick since the HP SX -> Ricoh Color series and ALL in between It has ALWAYS worked and even extended the life and gives IMHO a bolder darker (not too dark) print.**

I saw this alot with compatible toners

it's best not to cheep out on supplies to avoid PQ/CQ probs and part wear will be increased

thanks, yes, all OEM parts. The drum has 10,000 pages on it but has been in there a long time. I'll have a go at taking it apart and cleaning it up, otherwise get a new unit.
