The best / worst excuse for not turning up to work

What do you do with a tech that says he can’t come into work today because as his housemates left for work they slipped the dead bolt on the door and he can’t get out!!!
At least 50% of IT is a solution looking for a problem.

Only one door? No windows? You've got to be kidding. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

back when I first started I worked at a mom and pop dealer and we had hired some kid just out of high school to work in the shop, it snowed one day and it got to be around nine in the morning and he hadn't shown up yet so the owner calls him up to see if he was ok and apparently he thought since schools were closed so were we.

sounds like this boy doesn't own up to his responsibility, he agreed to do work... he doesn't show up and has a lame excuse.. ( he doesn't have keys... or there isn't a turn knob on the deadbolt?)

had a girl working for me decades ago... fast food... summer in NC 90+ degrees .. she called in .. she has to go to the beach ( lovely weekend ) her friends place at the beach had the water lines burst due to freezing .. yeah I told her to come get her last check.. it was ready and waiting ...

let the puppy go.. let him stay under the porch begging for scraps.

While working on a machine at a customers place I heard a guy call saying he wouldn't be in that day as he lost his shoes. When the manager hung up, speechless, I said "you should have asked how he got home?"

This is something I may have observed while probably in the Army Reserve, but have a management person drive out there and take a look. And tell the person that is making that claim that's about to happen, too. If the person is really locked in, the management person can cut them some slack on the spot, and call a locksmith as well. Or if the excuse is obviously fiction, the excuse maker can be canned without further review.
Have the management person driving to that place take a company vehicle to make it look more official. For what it is worth, I probably drove a humvee when I did this.
