    Company taking on Xerox

As a tech I can't see the logic in expecting repairmen to handle 4 or 5 brands of machines with a high level of knowledge and "first call efficiency"

But owners and sales don't think that way.

That being said, we're about to take on Xerox hard and heavy.

Should I be happy, at least open minded? Or should I run like hell?

    Thanks

    I feel your pain!

I’d start looking around for a dealer that you’re more Confident with.

I am one of those techs who works on everything. Have been officially trained on Xerox color. I hate Xerox the most, but that is because I work on them the least. If you only do 2 calls a year, you can't remember shit. You have to pretty much have a dedicated laptop for the Xerox stuff.

    Re: Company taking on Xerox

The first copier company that I worked for was a Mita and Brother dealer. And occasionally a Juki or Brother or IBM typewriter. I actually felt pretty competent most of the time.

I could walk into an office, and I didn't walk past the machine I was supposed to work on. I knew all the jam, error, and service codes off the top of my head. I carried parts for everything. Most of the time I could diagnose the problem from the cryptic comments from dispatch, before I even left the office.
    Those days are gone.

Now I recognize about 1/2 the machines I see. The other half I'm seeing for the first time. You absolutely have to have manuals and resources like Copytechnet.

I don't think that there is such a thing as a specialist any more, wherever you go it's the same. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Plaster on a fake smile, look happy and appear to be open minded (like most of the UK workforce).

But secretly, start the job search...

Unless, of course, you work directly for Konica or Ricoh. I may be wrong but not many other manufacturers have service departments in my parts.

    I've heard of this.

Can you give me a little synopsis of this?

Either I connect the laptop to the Xerox and it diagnoses & fixes the problem like a super-intelligent robot....or it's just a big pain in the a$$.

I know at least one tech in Great Britain who worked ten years for Xerox before deciding it was better to work for Ricoh.

Wonder if he still feels that way.

Ricoh had a bit of staff a culling after a certain merger took place I was informed by a rather bitter ex-Ricoh support employee.
