The town I grew up in had a very high alkaline content to the ground water to the point that they had to have potable water brought in by rail tank cars. RThe town had a dual water systems, 1 for drinking and cooking water and one for everything else, and 3 faucets in every kitchen . Later when the state condemned the tank cars they installed the first fully functional community operated reverse osmosis water filtration system. If you drank too much well water it would give you what we called the backyard trots, i.e. sudden extreme need to drain your bladder.
