Hurricane Isaias churns through Bahamas en route to Florida's east coast; North Carolina island evacuated
Miami officials closed beaches, marines and parks as Hurricane Isaias churned its way through the Bahamas on Saturday on a path skirting Florida and headed toward the East Coast.
Isaias had maximum sustained winds of 80 mph Saturday morning but was not expected to strengthen significantly through the weekend, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami.
Authorities in North Carolina ordered the evacuation of Ocracoke Island, which was slammed by last year’s Hurricane Dorian, starting Saturday evening.
Meanwhile, officials in the Bahamas evacuated people on Abaco Island, who have been living in temporary structures since Dorian. People living in the eastern end of Grand Bahama were also being moved.
A hurricane warning was in effect for Florida’s east coast from Boca Raton, just north of Miami, about 150 miles north to the Volusia-Brevard county line. A hurricane watch was in effect from Hallendale Beach to south of Boca Raton.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency in every coastal county of Florida’s Atlantic Coast, stretching from Miami-Dade to Nassau counties, on Friday in preparation for the storm.
At 11 a.m. EST, the storm was centered about 40 miles west southwest of Nassau in the Bahamas and was moving northwest at 12 mph. Forecasters said some decrease in its forward motion was expected.
Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 175 miles.
Little change in strength is expected through Sunday, with Isaias forecast to remain a hurricane into the weekend.
The Florida governor said the state was “fully prepared for this and any future storm during this hurricane season,” with stockpiles of personal protective equipment, generators, bottled water and meals ready to be distributed.
But he urged people to have seven days of food, water and medication on hand and said state-run coronavirus testing sites in the areas where the storm could hit would be closed.
“Our sites, because they’re outdoors with tents, if it were to get 40-, 50-mile-per-hour winds, it would just collapse,” he said. “Safety is paramount for that.”
Hurricane Isaias:How did the storm get its name, and how do you pronounce it?AccuWeather forecasters expect Isaias to make a run along the eastern seaboard of the United States this weekend into early next week.
How far west versus east Isaias tracks and exactly how strong and large the eye wall becomes will determine the severity of conditions in the Bahamas and along the Florida Atlantic coast, AccuWeather said.

Prosecutors have announced charges against three individuals, a 17-year-old from Florida and two men, from Florida and Britain, in connection with a hack that hit some of Twitter's most prominent accounts, in the largest and most well-coordinated security breach in the platform's history.
Authorities in Florida say Graham Ivan Clark, 17, of Tampa, Fla., masterminded the attack, allegedly breaking into the accounts of 130 Twitter accounts and duping followers of influential users to transfer more than $100,000 in Bitcoin to accounts associated with Clark. He is charged with 30 felonies in the state, including fraud, identity theft and hacking.

In addition, federal prosecutors unsealed wire fraud, money laundering and other charges against Nima Fazeli, 22, of Orlando, Fla. and Mason Sheppard, 19, of Bognor Regis, U.K. They are accused of helping Clark sell access to some of the hacked accounts.
Twitter has said the hackers used a phone "spear phishing attack" to trick Twitter employees to turn over information that gave the attackers access to internal systems.
The Florida prosecutors on Friday added new detail about how exactly the scheme worked: Clark allegedly presented himself as a member of Twitter's IT team to a Twitter employee, and convinced that employee to hand over company credentials, which Clark used to get into the company's customer service portal.
Security protections were overcome and the passwords of some 130 accounts were reset, allowing the hackers to take control of the accounts, officials at Twitter have said.
Nobody likes me,' Trump complains, as even his allies fadeLamenting his plunging popularity this week, a self-pitying President Donald Trump wondered how it all went wrong.
"Nobody likes me," he said, confounded at how his administration's health experts could be receiving accolades while he is accused of ignoring and denying the raging public health crisis.
"It can only be my personality," Trump said, "that's all."
