Peter Marks, MD, the director of the FDA Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, advocated for eligible people who are 50 years of age and older to receive a fourth COVID-19 booster vaccine dose, as well as announced the upcoming pediatric vaccination recommendation for children aged 5 to 11 years during a recent American Medical Association webinar.

Data show people who have received a third dose of a messenger RNA vaccine have relatively low rates of hospitalization and ER visits. Immunity protection decreases for those who only have received two doses, Dr. Marks explained.

“If you look for hospitalization, you see a very similar pattern. For three doses, you have vaccine effectiveness of 82% here, and two doses, given within the past six months about 50%, 52%. And if given more than six months earlier, 38%. So, again, showing this waning of protection.”

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — It was a promising COVID-19 treatment last year that is now sitting in stockpiles across the country. Hydroxychloroquine did not turn out to be the miracle drug once touted by the former president and sought out by Florida's governor.

Instead, it has become a commodity for which the state has little use.

Last April, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced he had secured a million doses of hydroxychloroquine from Israel at no cost to the state.

The Republican and close ally of, at that time, President Donald Trump hosted a roundtable with doctors who supported the use of the drug. The discussion came despite very little and often anecdotal evidence that hydroxychloroquine was beneficial in the fight against COVID-19.

The Coronavirus War Room, a project from Protect Our Care, is set to fly banners Thursday over Tampa criticizing Gov. Ron DeSantis as the U.S. nears one million deaths due to COVID-19.

The plane banners will be flown above the Amelie Arena prior to the Tampa Bay Lightning playoff game Thursday night, at around 5:30 p.m. The goal of the banners is to remind Floridians of the lives lost from COVID-19 under DeSantis’ leadership, the organization said in a news release.

“As DeSantis is busy campaigning for re-election and what many think are his higher ambitions — the U.S. recently hit the awful milestone of over one million lives lost due to COVID-19,” the Coronavirus War Room wrote in the release.
