An inside look at Trump’s failed coronavirus response

Despite decades of warnings and preparation, President Trump has claimed that covid-19 “came out of nowhere.” He downplayed the coronavirus as it began to take hold in the U.S., disregarding the advice of experts and politicizing a health crisis. Through interviews with former Trump administration officials Mark Harvey and Olivia Troye, along with Washington Post reporters Dan Balz and Yasmeen Abutaleb, “Playing it down” explores why the White House was slow to respond to the pandemic, and the far-reaching consequences of its inaction. After months of mixed messages, contradictory policies, divisive rhetoric — and more than 220,000 deaths — the president continues to insist the virus will one day disappear.

It will take a very substantial logistical effort to build up the infrastructure required to transport vaccines that require storage temperatures as low as -70C as required by the Pfizer vaccine.

The current commercial delivery chain is built to handle temperatures as low as -20C as required by the Moderna vaccine.

Transporting and storing vaccines at very low temperatures is know as the cold chain in the logistics business. Any break in the cold chain from manufacture, to transport to warehousing to delivery to onsite storage can cause the product to be spoiled.

A lot of health care facilities do not have the infrastructure to store vaccines at these very low temperatures. Sometimes, dry ice is used to help transport the product but for a lot of facilities safely disposing of large volumes of dry ice is a challenge.

The Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine was developed in partnership with a German bio-tech firm known as BioNTech.

The AstraZeneca vaccine was developed in partnership with Oxford University of England.

The UK government says frontline health care workers and nursing home residents will be the first to be vaccinated, followed by older people, starting with those over 80. The plan is to work down the age and risk groups until everyone 18 and over has been inoculated.

Non-medical staff including volunteer first-aiders are already being trained to give the shots, which will be administered at around 1,000 community vaccination centers and 40 to 50 large-scale facilities in stadiums and conference venues, according to a government planning document.

Pfizer and BioNTech say their vaccine is 95% effective, according to preliminary data. It must be stored at ultra-cold temperatures of around minus 94 Fahrenheit. The Moderna vaccine, which also needs to be stored at freezer temperatures, was also about 95% effective in clinical trials, the company said.

The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine can be stored at conventional refrigerator temperatures, making its distribution much simpler, and is also cheaper than its main rivals.

‘Absolutely remarkable’: No one who got Moderna’s vaccine in trial developed severe COVID-19
    By Jon CohenNov. 30, 2020 , 7:00 AM

Science’s COVID-19 reporting is supported by the Pulitzer Center and the Heising-Simons Foundation.

Continuing the spate of stunning news about COVID-19 vaccines, the biotech company Moderna announced the final results of the 30,000-person efficacy trial for its candidate in a press release today: Only 11 people who received two doses of the vaccine developed COVID-19 symptoms after being infected with the pandemic coronavirus, versus 185 symptomatic cases in a placebo group. That is an efficacy of 94.1%, the company says, far above what many vaccine scientists were expecting just a few weeks ago.

More impressive still, Moderna’s candidate had 100% efficacy against severe disease. There were zero such COVID-19 cases among those vaccinated, but 30 in the placebo group. The company today plans to file a request for emergency use authorization (EUA) for its vaccine with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and is also seeking a similar green light from the European Medicines Agency.
