Researchers who developed the mRNA technology behind Covid vaccines win "America's Nobel"

Two US researchers who developed the technology that underlies both the Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech Covid-19 vaccines won a prestigious medical prize Friday often known as "America's Nobel."

Dr. Drew Weissman and Katalin Karikó of the University of Pennsylvania share the 2021 Lasker clinical medical research award for their work developing messenger RNA technology, the Lasker Foundation said.

"This breakthrough enabled rapid development of highly effective Covid-19 vaccines. In addition to providing a tool for quelling a devastating pandemic, the innovation is fueling progress toward treatments and preventives for a range of different illnesses," the Foundation, which has been giving the awards since 1945, said in a statement.
Their technology is licensed to both BioNTech, which partners with Pfizer to make its vaccine, and Moderna, whose vaccine was developed in part with US federal research funding.

"The global impact and recognition of Weissman and Karikó's work has its roots in their years of research together at the University of Pennsylvania investigating mRNA as a potential therapeutic," the University of Pennsylvania said in a statement.

"Their groundbreaking study published in 2005 found that their concept -- which brought fresh hope to a field beset by skepticism and false starts -- could be a reality: that mRNA could be altered and then delivered effectively into the body to initiate a protective immune response. Their method to turn cells into factories that can temporarily produce proteins that serve as therapeutic compounds or stimulate the body's immune system to attack a specific pathogen also minimizes harmful inflammatory responses."

Using RNA is a safe way to make vaccines, the foundation said. "Unlike DNA, mRNA would not threaten the recipient cell's genomic integrity because it cannot integrate into the chromosome and interrupt resident genes or wreak other mutational havoc," it said.

The technology allows labs to make vaccines very quickly -- must faster than older technology -- and helped Pfizer and Moderna start making vaccines the day the novel coronavirus was sequenced in January of 2020.
Karikó and Weissman will split $250,000.

"Sometimes, we asked a question and made an experiment. And of course, instead of the answer, we got 100 more questions. It was very enjoyable. I would like to emphasize that to be a scientist is a joy," Karikó said in a statement.

Do you support Joe Biden/democrat racist vaccine mandate policy?

NY BLM Leader: De Blasio’s ‘Vaccine Mandate Is Racist and Specifically Targets Black New Yorkers’

One of the leaders of Black Lives Matter’s Greater New York chapter slammed Mayor Bill de Blasio for the city’s vaccine mandate, explaining the “mandate is racist and specifically targets black New Yorkers,” in a statement to Fox News.

Chivona Newsome cofounded the Greater New York Chapter of Black Lives Matter and ran as a congressional candidate for New York’s 15th district in the 2020 election. The former Congressional candidate blasted de Blasio’s vaccine mandate in a statement to Fox News.

Although Mayor Bill De Blasio ran on progressives values, nothing in his tenure will attest to his campaign promises,” Newsome explained to Fox. “The September 13th vaccine mandate is racist and specifically targets Black New Yorkers. The vaccination passports are modern-day Freedom Papers, which limit the free will of Black people.”
The vaccination mandates infringe upon the civil liberties of the Black community,” she told Fox. “It’s more than where we can dine or enjoy entertainment, it will result in loss of income. As of Monday, September 27, Black health care workers and educators will lose their jobs.”
She explained in her statement that de Blasio is, “fully aware of the hesitancy and distrust people of African descent have about vaccination and their interactions with government and law enforcement,” she told Fox News. De Blasio “chose to disenfranchise and force the very people who elected him into poverty and second-class citizenship,” according to Newsome.

Growth is found only in adversity.

An unvaccinated mother of three passed away on Sunday without holding her newborn son following a diagnosis of COVID-19 and pneumonia, according to her family.

Marrisha "ReRe" Kindred Jenkins was diagnosed on September 4, a month before she was due to give birth, but she went into labor three days later on September 7 and delivered a baby boy.

The baby, called Jaylen, was premature but healthy and was placed into quarantine before Marrisha had the opportunity to hold him. She would never get the chance.

Marrisha and her husband, Joshua Myles Jenkins, were set to visit baby Jaylen on Sunday.

According to a GoFundMe page the family has set up, "On Sunday morning, her and Myles were preparing to see their newborn for the first time."

"As she started getting ready, she having a hard time breathing. She went to take a bath, and they heard a noise. When they checked on her, she had a weak pulse. At that point, Myles called 911 and started CPR. Marrisha coded on the way to the hospital and upon arrival," the page says.

"Due to this, she was placed on a ventilator. After further assessment, the doctors determined Marrisha had severe brain damage. She lost her fight to COVID-19 on September 23, 2021."

Joshua Myles Jenkins told Atlanta's WSB-TV: "She was just loving.

"You just felt happy every time you got around her," he said.

Helena Kindred, Marrisha's mother, also spoke to WSB-TV, saying she did not expect her daughter to pass away after she had been sent home from the hospital.

"She said, 'mom, they said my lungs are clear' and they sent her home," Kindred said. "We said she has some issues but I wasn't expecting what happened to her."

Kindred described the situation as her daughter was brought to the hospital on Sunday: "Myles was doing CPR before they got there and she coded in the ambulance and when they got her to the hospital, she coded again.

"At that time, with no oxygen to the brain, it caused severe damage," she said.

On Thursday, the family decided to turn off life support and Marrisha Kindred Jenkins passed away. Her mother believes things might have gone differently if Marrisha had been vaccinated.

"If she had been vaccinated, I truly believe she would not have died," said Helena Kindred.

Marrisha Kindred Jenkins is survived by her husband and three children, six-year-old Rylee, five-year-old Ayden and baby Jaylen. She did not have insurance, so the family is accepting donations via GoFundMe.

"We truly appreciate the love you guys had for Marrisha 'ReRe' Kindred Jenkins. She will be truly missed," the page says.

Since Delta began circulating widely in the U.S., Covid has exacted a horrific death toll on red America: In counties where Donald Trump received at least 70 percent of the vote, the virus has killed about 47 out of every 100,000 people since the end of June, according to Charles Gaba, a health care analyst. In counties where Trump won less than 32 percent of the vote, the number is about 10 out of 100,000.

Maybe we should get a list that shows all deaths by whatevermeans everyday. You would think that covid is the only thing that kills anybody. I guess none of the other deaths matter.
