Purell and a number of other manufacturers make Professional Surface Disinfectants that are food preparation surface safe without having to rinse. Active ingredient is ethyl alcohol 29.4%, drinking alcohol 58.8 proof. In a pinch and you really need to disinfect a surface cheap Vodka will work. Right now many suppliers are out of stock on disinfectants.

This corona virus is something else so i would try and avoid that.

Wonder how the costumers will react if i get my gloves and mask on before working on the machine.
Whats next a full on hazmed suite?
You are missing the point. This short, inexpensive, easy to perform task is not about you. It is about the customer.

In any office environment, other than some door handles, the copier might very well be the second thing that employees collectively touch the most.

It is not hard to imagine an employee sneezing in front of a copier. Those airborne droplets can survive on a plastic surface for up to 36 hours.

If you were in China right now and walking around without a mask on, you would be considered a health hazard.

You do not have to wear one now, just procure one now and put a couple in your tool kit Approx $1.00 per dust mask. Plus a small bottle of hand sanitizer.

That is what I did today.

If you were that concerned about customers, why didn't you post your recommendation 4 weeks ago when this thread was first started?

I have now read that the mask is more about preventing an infected person from spreading the virus.

It does little to prevent you from catching the virus. That is more about constant hand sanitizing.

“The regular surgical masks that you might buy at the drug store probably are effective for half an hour, and after that, they become wet from your breath, then they’re much less effective,” said Dr. Stephen Blatt, medical director for infectious diseases at TriHealth. “The longer you wear them, the less effective they become.”
Dr. Senu Apewokin, an infectious-disease specialist at UC Health, said that while face masks can provide a temporary barrier against viruses, “we worry more about influenza than the coronavirus. The things we would do to prevent against the coronavirus are the very things we would do against influenza, washing hands, using alcohol-based hand sanitizers, avoid others who are ill, if you are sick, stay home.”

    Re. Disinfect surfaces.
A 50:50 mix of methylated spirits and white vinegar helps kill surface bacteria. You can add oil of clover into the mix to kill mould around moist areas. Place the mixture into a couple of spray or squirt bottles and keep it handy around the house and vehicles. Spray onto hands and door handles etc... I prefer a cup of bleach and a cup of vinegar for household cleaning though.

    Low on alcohol supply:
All those into home brew will tell you 2kg of sugar water mixed and two spoons of bakers yeast will produce around 1 litre of alcohol. Place the brewed out wash into the freezer over night , and then decant out the alcohol the next morning.

A household steam cleaner with a steam mop can assist with keeping most household surfaces clean: carpets, bench tops, funiture etc... It takes minimal time to wipe hot steam over most surfaces every few weeks.

A vacuum size steam cleaner will set you back around $200. Among other uses, they're handy little machines when it comes to removing problem stains from carpets, velours, vinyls in the house or vehicle. They're absolutely terrific at removing old window tint from glass.
