Re: Latest on the Corona Virus

President Joe Biden is set to take his first steps to reverse Trump administration health care policies. The White House said Biden plans on Thursday to sign orders on a range of issues including getting more Americans covered and removing curbs on abortion counseling.

The most concrete short-term impact will come from Biden reopening HealthCare.gov insurance markets as coverage has shrunk in the economic turmoil of the coronavirus pandemic. Created under the Obama-era Affordable Care Act, also called “Obamacare,” the marketplaces offer taxpayer-subsidized coverage regardless of a person’s medical history, or preexisting conditions, including COVID-19.

That new three-month “special enrollment period” could begin as soon as Feb. 15, according to a White House summary.

Re: Latest on the Corona Virus

The truth is starting to come out now:

New York State Attorney General and fellow Democrat Letitia James has accused Cuomo and his administration of undercounting coronavirus-related deaths at nursing homes by as much as 50%.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is a disaster, but his incompetence may stretch beyond the level he has already shown. According to a 76-page report cited in the New York Times on Thursday, New York State Attorney General and fellow Democrat Letitia James has accused Cuomo and his administration of undercounting coronavirus-related deaths at nursing homes by as much as 50%.

In simple terms, Cuomo’s administration is accused of hiding the correct estimate of coronavirus-related nursing home deaths by counting only the deaths that occurred in nursing homes and not the patients who died after being transferred from nursing homes to the hospital. If this allegation is correct, the current tally of 8,500 nursing home deaths is substantially undercounted.
    Again, 50%.
“In one instance, an unnamed facility reported 11 confirmed and presumed deaths to the Health Department as happening on site through early August,” a summary of the report’s findings says. “The attorney general’s survey of that same facility, however, found 40 deaths, including 27 at the home and 13 in hospitals.”

Cuomo has bragged about his handling of the pandemic, when in reality, maybe only Gavin Newsom has handled it worse. In March 2020, the NY attorney general’s office set up a hotline to address a flow of incoming complaints regarding coronavirus-related neglect at nursing homes. James received more than 770 complaints through August 3, and another 179 complaints through November 16.
In addition, the investigation has found that some New York nursing homes failed to comply with infection control protocols, and therefore, per Axios, caused the following:

    • Facilities with lower staffing ratings had higher COVID-19 fatality rates.
    • Insufficient PPE and testing for nursing home staff put residents and staff at increased risk.
    • Owners of for-profit nursing homes had a financial incentive to increase their own profits instead of investing in more staff, PPE and other safety measures.

“As the pandemic and our investigations continue, it is imperative that we understand why the residents of nursing homes in New York unnecessarily suffered at such an alarming rate,” James says.

“While we cannot bring back the individuals we lost to this crisis, this report seeks to offer transparency that the public deserves and to spur increased action to protect our most vulnerable residents.”
Cuomo’s office has not responded to requests for comment.
Fox News meteorologist Janice Dean, who called out Cuomo’s inept handling of the nursing homes before anyone else, tweeted that Cuomo must finally answer for his poor leadership:

Democrats are rotten to the core:

NY undercounted nursing home coronavirus deaths by as much as 50%, state AG says

James' report said that government guidance may have put residents at increased risk

New York Attorney General Letitia James said that the state Department of Health underreported COVID-19 deaths in nursing homes by as much as 50%, according to a report released Thursday.
The report holds New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's feet to the fire for his handling of the coronavirus pandemic in the early months of 2020, after he directed nursing homes in the Empire State to accept patients who had or were suspected of having COVID-19. The decision created an onslaught of COVID-19 cases that infected thousands of elderly patients and resulted in hundreds of deaths among the state's most vulnerable population.

The state Department of Health reported that as of Jan. 27, 2021 there were 5,957 confirmed deaths due to the coronavirus in nursing homes and an additional 2,783 presumed deaths. In assisted care facilities, there were 160 deaths and 52 presumed deaths.
Cuomo has defended the nursing home policy as in-line with guidance from the Trump administration at the time. The governor was silent Thursday following the new AG report and did not respond to Fox News' immediate request for comment.
James' report said that government guidance requiring the admission of COVID-19 patients into nursing homes may have put residents at increased risk of harm in some facilities and may have obscured the data available to assess that risk.
The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) asked 62 nursing homes to provide data about deaths in their facilities.
In one example, a facility reported five confirmed and six presumed COVID-19 deaths at the facility as of Aug. 3 to the Department of Health, yet reported to the OAG a total of 27 COVID-19 deaths at the facility and 13 hospital deaths — a discrepancy of 29 deaths.

The report, which revealed the findings of an investigation into allegations of patient neglect and other "concerning conduct" that jeopardized the health and safety of both patients and employees, said that some facilities failed to comply with health protocols to stop the spread of the virus.

Nursing homes that had low U.S. Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services Staffing ratings were found to have higher COVID-19 fatality rates.
In addition, lack of sufficient personal protective equipment for staff, as well as low availability of testing, could have also increased the patients' risk of contracting the virus, the report said.
About 70% of the nearly 35,000 COVID deaths in New York were people aged 70 and older, according to state data as of Jan. 28.
Investigations into more than 20 nursing homes whose reported conduct during the first wave of the pandemic presented particular concern are still ongoing, James added.

"As the pandemic and our investigations continue, it is imperative that we understand why the residents of nursing homes in New York unnecessarily suffered at such an alarming rate," James said in a statement. "While we cannot bring back the individuals we lost to this crisis, this report seeks to offer transparency that the public deserves and to spur increased action to protect our most vulnerable res
    idents."

Biden Revokes Trump Abortion Policy, Takes Steps To Shore Up Affordable Care Act

President Biden signed two executive actions Thursday that are designed to expand access to reproductive health care and health insurance through the Affordable Care Act and Medicaid.

"There's nothing new that we're doing here other than restoring the Affordable Care Act and restoring Medicaid to the way it was before [Donald] Trump became president. Because by fiat, he changed — made [it] more inaccessible, more expensive and more difficult for people to qualify for either of those two plans," Biden said in a brief Oval Office signing ceremony.

"I'm not initiating any new law, any new aspect of the law," Biden stated. "This is going back to what the situation was prior to Trump's executive order."

An executive order Biden signed instructs the Department of Health and Human Services to open a special enrollment period for the Affordable Care Act through HealthCare.gov, the federally run health insurance marketplace. The enrollment period will run Feb. 15 to May 15, giving Americans who have lost their employer-based health insurance due to the pandemic an opportunity to sign up for coverage

"like your doctor .. you keep your doctor" " you will pay $2500 less for coverage "

one reason it failed is because younger folks didn't sign up for it.

john roberts lied when he said it wasn't a tax,, then a few years later admitted it WAS a tax.

Not a big surprise that President Biden would restore the ACA back to where it was when Obama left office. Joe Biden was a key player in developing the ACA and it is now safely installed in US society.

President Biden has so much work to do in his first 100 days that he does not need to get bogged down in rewriting healthcare legislation.

In 2020, despite all of the Republican efforts to repeal Obamacare, 8.3M citizens enrolled in this plan.

I remember one of the big issues against Obamacare was the mandatory enrollments. I do not know if this is part of President Biden's plan. It sounds like it.
