    On this day in 1989, President Ronald Reagan gives his Farewell Address to the Nation. In doing so, he defined his vision of “the shining city upon a hill.”[I]“n my mind it was a tall, proud city built on rocks stronger than oceans, windswept, God-blessed, and teeming with people of all kinds living in harmony and peace; a city with free ports that hummed with commerce and creativity. And if there had to be city walls, the walls had doors and the doors were open to anyone with the will and the heart to get here.”

    For we must consider that we shall be as a city upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us. So that if we shall deal falsely with our God in this work we have undertaken, and so cause Him to withdraw His present help from us, we shall be made a story and a by-word through the world.”

    Therefore, this is the ultimate aim of American exceptionalism.

    Chuck DeVore: Hewlett Packard packs up -- Will California ever get fed up with losing to Texas?

    Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), the California firm that literally kickstarted Silicon Valley in a garage in 1939, is moving to Texas. The low-key announcement was made via an SEC filing on Dec. 1.

    If California’s anti-jobs policies, its high taxes, capricious regulatory enforcement, and blackout-inducing energy policy can chase out the company that launched Silicon Valley, is any business, large or small, immune from pressure to move? Unless a company must directly serve the California market, such as a fast-food chain, the answer is a resounding “No!”
    And there’s no sign that things are about to turnaround soon: after the 2020 election, Democrats retained their supermajorities in both legislative chambers while controlling every statewide office. In effect, California is a one-party, anti-free enterprise state.
    Taking advantage of California’s penchant for crushing businesses, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued a statement noting, “We are excited that Hewlett Packard Enterprise has chosen to call Texas home… Hewlett Packard Enterprise joins more than 50 Fortune 500 companies headquartered in the Lone Star State, including 22 in the Houston area alone.”

    Abbott frequently urges corporations to move to Texas, citing the Lone Star State’s lower taxes, more reasonable regulatory burden, more affordable housing, and better lawsuit environment.



    In its filing, HPE stated that it has was relocated its headquarters from San Jose to Houston because that Texas city was already, “HPE’s largest U.S. employment hub, (and) an attractive market to recruit and retain future diverse talent, and is where the company is currently constructing a state-of-the-art new campus.” For the immediate future, much of HPE’s research and product development will still take place in California.


    HPE’s move to Texas comes months after Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk threatened to move his company headquarters to Texas or Nevada, both states featuring no personal income tax and lower corporate taxes than in California.


    Tesla is rapidly constructing a gigafactory outside of Austin, breaking ground only weeks after the announced effort. A similar factory would have taken around five years simply to work through government approvals and environmental lawsuits in California.

    In Malawi, around 65 percent of students do not have a desk or chair. The Kids in Need of Desks (K.I.N.D.) campaign, launched by the UNICEF USA, aims to change that by delivering desks to hundreds of schools. K.I.N.D. also provides secondary school scholarships to Malawian girls most in danger of missing out on an education.

    In their first joint interview President Biden and VP Kamala Harris were asked for their opinions on whether or not Trump should attend his inauguration.

    Biden smiled and then said that Trump is not obligated to attend. He can do whatever he wants. It did not matter to Biden personally.

    He then went onto say that the long standing tradition going back to the 1860s of the past President attending the new President's inauguration is a meaningful symbol to the world of the peaceful transfer of power as envisioned by the Democratic process.

    President Obama and many Presidents before him attended the inauguration.

    ... in the same interview President Biden was asked for his thoughts on how the two Senate votes in Georgia would effect his agenda in office.

    Biden said that to swing these two votes to Democrats would certainly make it much easier to execute his plans as the Democrats would now control all three levels of the US gov't.

    He also said that he has rec'd many congratulatory votes from Republican Senators who have tired of the legislative gridlock of the last four years and were willing to work with him for the sake of the country now enduring multiple, simultaneous crisis.

    The team planning President-elect Joe Biden's Inauguration Day festivities is urging Americans to stay at home and celebrate the tradition where it is safe, given the risks of traveling and gathering during the coronavirus pandemic.

    Biden's presidential inaugural committee named a chief medical adviser for the day, Dr. David Kessler — the former Food and Drug Administration commissioner, who was an adviser to the Biden campaign.

    Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris plan to take their oaths of office at the U.S. Capitol, the committee said in a statement. "The ceremony's footprint will be extremely limited, and the parade that follows will be reimagined," it said.

    The committee has also hired what it called "seasoned production experts" to work on the program for Americans to watch at home, including Stephanie Cutter, Ricky Kirshner and Rod O'Connor, who worked on the 2020 Democratic National Convention, which was a virtual event. The team has experience planning Super Bowl halftime shows and the Tony Awards, the committee said.

    During normal pre-COVID years, 200,000 Inauguration tickets are issued to members of Congress. For President Biden's inauguration, in line with the grim reality that over 300,000 US citizens had died from COVID-19 and consistent with President Biden's election campaign style, each member of Congress will be allocated one ticket plus one more to enable proper social distancing for attendees.
