The spam is getting out of control. I don't know what can be done about it, if anything. I'm strarting this thread in hopes that the powers that be will do something about it. If not, spam is gonna make this place unusable....eventually. And that would be ashame.

That's not working. This is my plan B.

    Re: Spam

During the time that I was moderating United Techs Online we got between 12-50 spam memberships every single day, often the same spammers again & again & again. Email activation filtered out 75% of those. Of the ones that completed activation, I would send an email welcoming the new member and asking them about their copier service experience. Most spammers would not respond to that email.

It was a major undertaking sorting out spammers from serious inquiries. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

    Re: Spam

Billy is right, this is annoying...

I do run a forum myself (phpBB based) and we don't have any spammer issues anymore. In the beginning ~2009 we had the same probs but the solution is so simple:

You just have to use a a good old Q&A captcha that can't be tricked by bots. I think reCaptcha just doesn't do the trick anymore.

Like in our case it should be a question about copier technology (like "what does opc stand for?") and the answer has to be entered in a text field (NO multiple choice).
Both bots and certain "other kinds"uf users (that kind we won't miss..^^) won't jump over this fence.

On my board we also moderate the first posts from new users so they show up on the board only after approval by the mods. After a certain number of posts new users
become "regulars" so they can use the board without restrictions. This is optional though - the most imprtant thing is to prevent that bots can register themself here in the first place too easy.

I'm not an expert for the vBulletin board but I can't imagine it's rocket sience. I'd be happy to try and help to figure out IF and HOW this can be set up within a vBulletin enviroment.

Admin has be absent long enough now that his inbox is most likely full. What we need is for aneurysm to pick a second administrator and some moderators.
