    Room Acoustics

Imagine if you shot a rubber ball out the end of an air gun at a high speed and it bounced around the room from one wall to another until all the energy was lost. Now imagine that you did that with 11 air guns.

That's how it works for sound bouncing off the wall.

You hear "direct" sound first. That's the sound coming directly from the speaker. Then you here sound reflected from the wall...each one hitting your ear delayed by milli-seconds. This result is a muddied sound.

How to correct? Put up a bunch for acoustic panels.

But first you have to make them. They're filled with Rock Wool Insulation. Sound goes in but doesn't come out.

Draperies and decorative wall hanging like some Persian rugs also help.

True, but those things really wouldn't make much of a difference in this room. For lack of a better way of explaining it...the sound in this room is violent. There's some serious wattage in the hi-fi system. I can be sitting in the recliner and it shakes me so hard that it's kind of scary. I need serious acoustic panels that were thick and strategically placed on the walls. I'm also gonna make some bass traps for the corners of the room.

The acoustic panels have made a huge difference.
