    Re: 3d printing real?

    [ Repost ]

Yes it appears that 3D printers are the way of the future for many industries and medicial institutions.

I have seen documentories on large scale 3D printer being used to manufacture abstract concrete products.
I've seen 3D printer used to print bronze statues. They print a figure using sand or iron powder and then infuse it with nickle. The nickle object is then placed in a furnace with bronze filings and melted into the printed statue to crete a bronze figure of any object.

A fellow technician I spoke with informed me of a process of printing a human heart. They use a process of stem cells to build a new heart. If I'm to believe the rest of the story they even got the heart to start beating...
They are already rebuilding broken bones in the human body using a 3D printer process. They print using calcium phosphate which is simliar to human bone. They graph the new bone into the patient and the human body then replaces the 3D printed bone with natural bone.

I believe the future is exciting for all new copier technicians...

Not only is it real, it's been around for at least the past 5~6 years with a push. (some 3d printing has been going on for a lot longer than that) It's an AMAZING tech and it's something you should look forward to seeing a lot of in the near future.

On a side note, it's not 3D printing but they are using an ink jet type printer to print new skin on burn victims which is really cool.
Color is not 4 times harder... it's 65,000 times harder. They call it "TECH MODE" for a reason. I have manual's and firmware for ya, course... you are going to have to earn it.

Got to see them up close.

They said copier techs would have no problem migrating to 3d.

Uses the same principles as a copier.
I would say "same process as an inkjet" not a copier.

Hmm, who's going to dig all the squiggy bits of human organ out of the feed path when it gets a jam?
At least 50% of IT is a solution looking for a problem.

    Haha ... I own a 2800 psi pressure cleaner.

I'm not overly fussed on all the extra tomato sauce that would come with this type of clean up job either.

Have cleaner will use. Stand back..... lookout....

Here's another high minded way 3D printing is being touted:
Is 3D Printing the Future of Disaster Relief? | Motherboard
It is an awesome concept if it works, but I for one am going to wait and see how this plays out in real life first.

With respect to the above hyperlink. They are talking about using 3D printers for disaster relief. The idea of printing surgical tools, clamps, clutches ect. They are talking about printing an entire object, which can take hours or even days to print with current 3D technology. If they looked past printing just one object by itself, they would indeed realise you would use a 3D printer to make an injection mould whereby you can make many copies very quicky. Example : you require crutchs to assit people with leg injuries. It would be faster to 3D print a mould that can be used to inject fibre glass resin and create many crutchs in a short time. So the practical applications for disaster relief are already here.

    ::No longer a Techician::

Best thing about 3D printing is that the copier technician would be able to 3D print new gears, spockets, arbors, door hinges and all kinds of refits and retrofits to any damage machine. The copier Technician would no longer be able to call himself a Technician, he would be called a Copier Engineer. He may have to learn Computer Aided Design(CAD) as part of his new trade.
The factory would no longer be required to send out parts. You would buy a copyright order off the parent company which would allow the dealership to 3D print X-amount of parts using the parent companies preapproved CAD designs.

3D printing holds some interesting possiblities for the future....
