Actually I think it is the calcium carbonate added to the water in order to get it to absorb the carbon dioxide. Beer doesn't need calcium carbonate nor does champagne or sparkling wines.

Not that I am aware of. Regional domestic beers are popular such as Coors. Lately there have been local micro breweries that have become very popular. Personally when I was in college I had a preference for imported Germany lagers.

    Re: FOOD

Calcium carbonate is still added to wine, but not to sparkling wines. It is used in the form of a fine powder to reduce the acidity of wine to the desired level. Just 6-7 grams of this product can reduce the acidity of 10 liters of wort (wine) by 1 gram per liter. I was making homemade wine and I was able to achieve that taste as in store wine, no heartburn or stomach irritation. This kind of wine goes well with meat. I found the best homemade beef jerky recipe and served it with the wine for Thanksgiving. There was turkey too, but the guests liked the beef, booze and appetizers.

Beside that mushroom, I love Asian food, most from Vietnam, the beef and whole sea food!
