    Actually I think it is the calcium carbonate added to the water in order to get it to absorb the carbon dioxide. Beer doesn't need calcium carbonate nor does champagne or sparkling wines.

    Do you lot across the pond drink real ale its fairly popular here in the UK Old Speckled Hen is one of my favorites?

    Not that I am aware of. Regional domestic beers are popular such as Coors. Lately there have been local micro breweries that have become very popular. Personally when I was in college I had a preference for imported Germany lagers.
