Transfer Belt can be clogged. The back side of xfer belt is a waste toner bottle. Open and vacuum It. Rotate by hand the belt, when they're a lot of time stopped, get sticked to the rollers.

If this doesn't work, change the part.

I've had a few where the transfer belt drive gear has disappeared... presumably users manage to lose them while removing a jam.

This model and the 5000, its predecessors and subsequent models are well known for crappy copy quality. Ricoh has changed toner manufacturers in the past because of the problem. Quick check, look at the development roller. If the roller is coated black, not just toner that wipes off easily with a soft cloth but a film that has to be scrubbed off with a copper bristle brush or a scratchy pad. To correct it you need to first have in your possession Genuine Ricoh developer and toner.

Dump the development unit. Scrub the costing off the roller completely. Some also recommend coating the roller with a metal polish. Now clean all toner and residue from the pcu to include the toner recycle system and the toner hopper. If there is any toner residue in the waste toner/transfer belt unit, clean it as well.

Once all old toner is gone you're ready to put back together using Genuine Ricoh supplies and toner.

Having dealt with many of these I can sadly attest that this is the ONLY mostly sure way to get the machine running cleanly. Even then if the machine is underused it may well go to crap again.

These things are the devil spawn.

if you replace the develoment fliters at approx. 90K, it will last longer...

I actually really like these machines. Forgot the SP number but SP2 somewhere is P Pattern Setting. Drop that from 100 to 25 and they run like a dream even when printing small jobs

Provided it's up to date with PM's

You'd be running process control patterns 4 times as often which would consume some toner. Probably why it works better. These and the larger machines like the MP6002 really do NOT like to be underused, especially in the coverage department.
