    MP161SPF scanning question

    Good evening all.

I'd like to know what's the maximum RAM this machine can take - is the 128+256Mb of the SPF model the maximum available, or is it possible to go even further?

I'd like to know because of the impossibility of scanning color 600dpi with the default RAM, and I can't find a definitive answer anywhere.

    Cheers!

You might be able to install larger memory strips but the processor will be able to access it without a custom firmware update which Ricoh will charge you, probably a few thousand dollars for each nodule that needs to be changed. It might require an HDD to buffer a scan that size.

The MP161 is an older machine and I do not think it can scan in color.

I have one, and yes it can scan in colour. You can't scan in colour at 600dpi in the as delivered configuration. I suspect if you had a 512MB stick of RAM to replace the 256MB it comes with it might work but do not know for sure. The 161 does not have an HDD nor can one be installed.

If you need to scan at 600dpi you will be better off purchasing a pro scanner. The MP161 would be very slow should you even get it to scan at that high DPI.
