“The card authentication device is not connected.”

We picked up 6 used MP C4504EX machines to resell. Most of them have “The card authentication device is not connected.” blinking across the top of the screen. They also have a shortcut named "CAC Scan" on the home screen. I'm guessing these machine had a Common Access Card installed which I am not familiar with.

Anyone have any experience with this. Really just trying to get the blinking reminder to go away.

The reference to "CAC Scan" tell me that they were probably previously install at a military facility. If so, the actual CAC scanners were the property of the US government and were removed by them. CAC or Common Access Card is the encrypted RFID chip on active and reserve Military ID cards.

That makes sense. A couple of them have a big green sticker on the front that says "This medium is unclassified US Government Property"

I'm guessing there is an SP Mode to turn off, but have been unable to find it.

In SP mode do the following:
SP 5420 change all functions back to initial value
    SP 5401-103 back to 0
SP 5401-162 toggle bits 0 and 7 back to 0
SP 5401-230 toggle bit 0 back to 0
SP 5401-240 toggle bits 0 and 1 back to 0

There are also settings in User Tools - System Settings - Administrator Settings - Enhanced Authentication Management turn OFF.

Power cycle. If you find you still need the installation manual PM me with your email address.

Thanks for the reply. Tried that and got same results. Sent you a PM.

When the machine first turns on it has an unusual looking screen that has a big Ricoh logo and says "Booting Up". You can see "CAC Authentication" in the upper right corner. Then it shows a typical home screen.

That one probably has the CAC V4 which resides in the op panel instead of in Java. Based on the symptom that sounds most likely. If you can get into user tools and look under "extended features" and see if the CAC software is there. If it isn't there then it's on the OP panel.

I think you may be on to something. I checked extended features and there is no CAC there. Checking OP Panel. Thanks for the help.

BAM. Fixed. It was installed on the SOP. I didn't even know you could do that. LOL. Thanks so much for the help.

No problem. Most of my customers still run version 3.x CAC which is Java but I have a hand full that use the newer android based so I've seen it a few times.

Could you tell me the procedure you followed? How did you delete this message?

I get the same message, “The card authentication device is not connected.” in MP C5504.

    Thanks a lot,
    Manos
