I just looked at a MP C6004EX (newest model I have here), and it still has the SP mode where you can turn off the "toner refill detection display". When it is on you get a "independent toner cartridge" on the display, but the machine still works. Don't know about other later models.
NEVER ASSUME ANYTHING
Haven't heard or see anything of that nature on any of the IM or older models I have installed. The writer of that article has no idea how the auto update function works. Doesn't understand that it can be turned off, machine need to be on @ remote for it to work, and that a firewall could also block that function. Although, that doesn't mean that function is not there, just that I haven't seen it....yet.
FWIW, the article in the original post is from Vince McHugh, who has a very solid reputation.

This has been fought in courts many times and the OEM always lost. They have to allow aftermarket toners to be used in their machines! But the question is how the OEM's "sabotage" their machines so you have nothing but issues with aftermarket supplies.....
Hi there!
The only information i´ve heard is that RICOH introduces "country codes", like HP. That you can brick the machine with the wrong toner is not clear/explained.
Greetings...
At the risk of sounding extremely boring there's an European Union ECO Label that can apply to imaging products and the applicant / manufacturer must
So if the ECO label means anything that firmware would have to be re written for Europe.
If requested by
the competent body the applicant shall submit instructions on how the cartridge shall be
remanufactured and/or refilled
When you think you have made a procedure idiot proof your company employs a better idiot.
