My point, I am very interested in technical stuff, I like exploring possibilities and limits, I like to optimize, I like to investigate.
In the end, if I came over a wreck of a 2551 and pulled the main control board from it, what would I need to do to get that board to work in a 2051...

As a side note. Previously I installed a lot of residential heat pumps from Toshiba. They had a serie, labeled XXXX-10, XXXX-13, XXXX-16 etc size. On the outdor units the only difference was, absolutely nothing, still the outdoor units knew if it was a 10, a 13 or a 16 size. The way this was done was that there was three wire links which could be cut. From factory all was uncut, and one had to cut to a spesific pattern to configure the outdoor unit to the correct size.

I would hazard a guess it could be as simple as this that Ricoh also have done with the controller board to distinguish wheter it should act as a 2051 ot a 2551, except it is not as obvious as a wire link, it could be a smd resistor with different values for example.

For those of you who've been around here long enough, it seems we have the totally unnecessary second coming of aab1 on our hands.
I also just discovered that he was, in fact, from Canada, and I apologize on behalf of all of us for the torture he dished out

Hey brother no issue with me. I can't/won't go around apologizing for all the dumbasses in my country. No need to for you to do that.

Appreciate it, Phil, but just said it to have some fun at 'ol aab1's expense for old time sake

Lets focus on real problems, not hypothetical.
Please start you post with brand, model, problem.
