printer preferences from old machine to new machine

    Hoi,
At this customer there was a mpc2800, and now a imc3000.
Letterhead was/is in tray 3 (both with mpc2800 and imc3000)
When older Word doc's wanted to be print (one from tray 1 & one from tray 3) with preference = tray 1, it is always printing from tray 3...
Even when we select tray 1, that won't make a difference, it only print from tray 3.
So, we copy paste the text and put it in a new Word doc, and that is ok, as long as we select "copy without all other settings" (or something like that).
If we copy those "all other settings" with it, it is the same problem.
We were obligated to use the same IP address (on the command of the IT'er) as the mpc2800, could that be the issue?
    Thanks in advance.

I would check the word doc Page Setup

Select Print = look under the Settings options and at the bottom another link = Page Setup - select the Paper tab and check the page setting.

In Word the setting under "options", "advanced", "print(settings)", "standardtray", says "use the printerpreferences"
But still it will print from tray 3 instead of the tray we have selected at the preferences.
So, we think it is a matter of the (same) IP address, because i have experienced before that this will give such bizar issues.

Age old problem with Microsoft Word. Unless you tell it otherwise the printer settings are saved with the document.

The Word file itself has the tray setting in it. I use this scenario in my training classes to teach Printer Hierarchy...try this:

In Word FILE > OPTIONS > ADVANCED > scroll down to the heading that says Print. Here you will find all your printing settings for the file itself. The settings you want is called Default tray.

You can also try setting the new machine as the default printer, and then open and re-save the Word doc.

That’s a really old trick, but it may still work.

Is the file protected or is it editable in Word ?
You mention an "older" version, what Word file type is it (doc or docx) ?

Re: printer preferences from old machine to new machine

Seen this a few times over the years. Usually when 1 person creates a document, saves it a certain way and sends it to someone else. Those settings are built into it but the new person can't see them so when it prints a wrong size or tray etc they blame the printer.
Workarounds have already been mentioned in here, depending where they get the document from originally I sometimes say can you ask that person to not set thsoe defaults before sending to you, if they have a known relationship.
Other times customer is happy to just copy and paste into a new document... this is also the best way to prove it is not the printers fault as well.
I think in Advanced - Printer Settings there is a dropdown box to select default tray or choose print driver settings on latest version of Word, maybe others?
Essentially several ways to get past it, usually what ever the customer finds most practical.
A bit like when chrome has a little print option tick box to ignore driver settings, so it tries printing its own way and machine starts beeping to say paper mismatch.
