    SC681

    Error SC681-xx

I've run into this a few times on the '03 and '04 midsize color machines. I know there is a bulletin regarding the bottle lock spring but I've also found another cause for this error. Each chip on the toner bottle touches a board (PCB:TCB) at the back of the machine. I've found that when this error occurs the PCB:TCB is usually covered in toner. Specifically, the solder joints on the back of the harness connector face towards the bottle. I suspect the toner might be shorting out the connector. Usually, after I clean the board I will seal it with hot glue. I've not had any return for this error after the repair was made. I've attached photos of the PCB:TCB and the steps taken.

I have usually found that one or both of the contacts on the post is damaged.

Thanks for this one. I am going to try the hot glue thing, as I have intermittent 681's on my equipment too. How involved is removing the little PCB from the machine for the mod?

It's not that difficult. Once you swing the controller box out of the way the toner bottle motor and PCB:TCB are right there. 2 screws for the motor, 2 screws for the board, and loosening the harnesses to get the motors out of the way.

Ricoh states that outside RF interference is also a cause for this code. I bet that covering those solder joints with glue will also help out with that.
