    Printing problem on MPC7501

I was sent to look at an MPC7501, even though I don't work on them, as it looked like it was a connectivity problem when another tech looked at it this morning. When the customer sends a print job (all users, all print jobs) to the machine, the red light comes on, and paper mismatch occurs, when a tray is selected the job is printed, however, if they have asked for more than one set, then only one set is printed.
When I got there I printed the meter reading sheet and SMC data with no problem, but when I tried to print the config sheet I got the paper mismatch, I also got this when I tried to print the colour test pattern from printer SP. Changing the paper type in tray 1 from recycled to no display allowed the config sheet to print out without problem, although plain paper and recycled should be treated the same by the machine, but it still failed on the test pattern.
My first thoughts were a corrupt RAM, so I did memory clear on printer, NCS and engine data with no joy. I upgraded the firmware to the latest level, still no joy. And, just to satisfy myself that it wasn't anything to do with their network, I loaded the print driver onto my laptop and printed from there, exactly the same. I have escalated this onto our tech specialist within the team, but he can't get in there for a couple of days and has no idea yet what it could be, has anyone else ever come across this problem.

Recyclyed paper type will always mismatch, not a network enginner myself but I'd turn off paper type in user tools & tell the customer to update the driver/server settings to plain paper, just a thought-what do I know?

Even with the paper type turned off, and the driver loaded locally on my laptop it still gave the same problem. When you get the mismatch it is asking for plain/recycled paper, so recycled paper shouldn't cause this problem, but it was one of the first things I tried, thanks

I have seen this when the paper was loaded one way (either SEF or LEF) and the driver was requesting the other way. Check the setting for Auto Continue and Auto Tray Switching,

If there is a paper mismatch the machine will only print one set of the job after manually selecting the paper size. If you set printer bit switch 5 to 1 then it will print all the sets, but may cause other issues. Does it do this from all trays? Have you tried a different print driver?

I have had the issue where the color test print from the Printer SP wouldn't print before. Customer was always changing settings on the trays to "Bond" etc. I just set tray 1 to no display and weight 2 I believe. Sure there's a reason for that. No idea why though. I would try different drivers. I have had a few issues like you are describing but firmware always fixed it.

This might be stupid, but is the machine location set up correctly? Sounds a little bit like the machine is set up to detect paper sizes from here or Asia or somewhere else other than there.
I think the setting for that is in SP5 somewhere, but I can't recall the exact location right now.

    Re: Printing problem on MPC7501

Thanks for all the suggestions, let's try to answer them all

Thanks Paul, but I do have the manual, not that I usually need it, I have managed to avoid working on this model

Sub paper size is already turned on, that was my first suggestion when the other guy called me from site in the morning, and I checked it when I arrived on site

I didn't check the location in SP mode, but the machine has been on site for sometime and has only just started doing this, if I remember right, location is in SSP, I can't imagine anyone getting in there and changing it by accident (of course, nothing is impossible) the paper trays are showing the correct sizes (A4, A3)

I tried turning off the paper type on trays 1 and 2 and had the correct weight (80gsm, weight 2) set for both, and had tray 2 loaded SEF, with a new PCL6 driver on my laptop, so I can rule out a driver problem

I hadn't realised that it would only print one set if there was a mismatch, so maybe there is only one fault, thanks for that

As I said, it won't be me going back, but if I can give any assistance to the guy who is going in there then I'd like to help him out, and I will, of course, feed back whatever he finds.
The original engineer will also be going back in to service it, the print quality was awful!!!!
