Ok.
Can you tell me the specs of the 500 drive brand, model, etc.. Also which samsung product did you put the 500 on.
I experimented a bit with a few drives and models but didn't have enough opportunity to reach a good conclusion.

Very interesting, so you had some WD 500GB drives work and others not.
I can confirm Western Digital 1TB WD10SPZX does NOT work on CLX-9301.
Even if you do a sector by sector clone from a working drive it does not boot, so the check cannot be in the recovery application. It should not be a bootloader limitation either because then the recovery would still write to disk.
It must either be in the SATA chipset or the disk driver.
The main board has one ARM946 250MHz cpu and one Cortex A9 1Ghz cpu.
The ARM946 has 8kB flash and the Cortex A9 has 32kB flash.
It also has 128MB of NAND storage.
Neither of the builtin flash is large enough for a SATA implementation so it would have to be a separate controller, builtin to the A9 or in the 128MB flash.
I have unpacked the firmware image and cannot really find it there. I suspect that image is only for the ARM946.
Does anyone have a cpu board availible to look what A9 chipset it is using and if there is a separate SATA controller?

ive never tried data transfer always re do the recovery from scratch
I also have SL-M4580FX / m4583FX as someone in this thread, and in need of HDD Image file. It gives hard drive error, and i am trying to replace drive and need to recover it. Does anyone have it?
Do you have a suitable drive ready
