If it happens only on plain paper the tray settings are not correct. Try setting the paper weight to a higher weight.

Yes the film can be changed on its own. Similar to the smaller canon units. Get a hold of the SM and it will guide you through. Good Luck.
Looks like there is dirt on the slit glass. Check the manual on how to clean it.
