I'd swap the gears as a set. Sometimes you can clean them up but if the bearings have been damaged it might last a year, month, etc

If they keep a spare of each we set the threshold low - Stops customers swapping them with a quarter left in the bottle when they see the message. But if they're low users I'd probably not touch it....
