Post Sharp AR-157e bad copies through SPF/ AE only

I have a few of these pieces of junk out there and both of them have bad copy quality when using the SPF in auto exp. only.

I have changed exp setting in SPF and while it looks good in the service settings as soon as you go back to regular mode (AE only) it gives light copies wth a haze or slightly dark background.

Making a copy through SPF in text mode is fine just AE is bad?

Now I have a AR -168s that is starting to show the same symtoms

It looks like you are setting exposure while in test commands, which should be done while not in toner save and with the user programs set for three (density levels for OC and SPF). This way the user can adjust up or down to his specs.
The same for the AR168 and most other Sharps.

machines are not in toner save and problem is intermitent but it is only in AE and using SPF. I talked with Sharp and they had a bulliten that said to adjust the main lens and back off the black screw holding the lens in place or some nonsense, which i tried with no luck.

?????????because it's intermittant I don't think it would be a lens adjustment, because it would throw a code or put a dark band on one edge of copy. Try adjusting the AE for the SPF (page 12-2 in SM) in the User Programs to the highest number and see if there is improvement.
Also, what is TC 46-19 set at?

I would definitely un-do the bit about the lens. Faulty reasoning there. If it was the lens it would affect all copies.
