a lot of times it is due to extreme traffic on the site or maybe another round of DDOS attacks are being used. or could be the move from HTTP to HTTPS
The 504 Gateway Timeout error is an HTTP status code and now I believe we're moving towards HTTPS...
Can't speak for myself as luckily I didn't see it.

I don't reply to private messages from end users.
Could be any gateway, internet switch/router, between your computer and the server you are trying to access. I encounter frequently, usually between 15 minutes before the hour and 10 minutes after. I usually just wait half an hour, try again and it goes through. One thing I have noticed is that it is worst when there is a major sports event that a lot of people are streaming.
Aneurysm has checked in the past and found no logged errors at the server end for the time period I was having trouble.
