Difference between C and K Toshiba drums - AC series

Hey all, I'm trying to wrap my brain around this. Are the Toshiba OD-FC505 - 6LK49015000 absolutely required as the black drum for the AC series or are the Toshiba OD-FC50 - 6LJ70598000 suitable for black as well as color? What's the difference between the two? Yield?

I don't have my manuals in front of me but I would bet money the only difference is the thickness of the outer most coating - Ricoh used to up the yield every model and the ONLY difference between the new longer life drum and the older drum was the outer coating and the price of the new drum was cheaper...Whichever one has the longer yield is probably the thicker coating one.

The next question would be, are the blades the same?

The black drum is designed to last ~200K, and the color drums ~120K. The front drum shaft is a different size, otherwise they are the same.

So there are two ways you can go with this:
    1) if you were to order a replacement front drum shaft from a color unit, you could install it on a black unit, and use the FC30/FC50 drums on all four, but get a reduced yield for black.
    2) if you were to order three replacement front drum shafts from a black unit, you could install it on the color units, and use the FC505 drums on all four, for extended yield for color.

    =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

    Well poop!

Thanks blackcat for finishing the research.

Man I hate it when manufactures do silly things like that.

    Ah hah! Thanks Blackcat!

I was curious if this was similar to the Panasonic line where they made two different drums, one for K and one for color. They put the C drums at a ridiculous cost and then come to find out you could modify the K drums to fit all the colors. The AC drums make sense and it's pretty cool to have a choice.

I think that you'll find that the scorotron and grid do not last the full 200K, so it makes the most sense to me to use the lower yield drums, and do a black PM at 120K.

We've noticed a few of the highest volume machines build up heat at the left rear developing seal/bearing. Once it starts it happens very quickly. I caught the first when the rocks were still small, but there were too many rocks, it turned into a developing rebuild. On the second machine, the rocks were large enough to seize the developing unit. Within 50 prints it went from good quality to huge voids and seized. It broke the coupler (with gear 29T). Both machines do heavy fill and long runs, so I don't know if it's the heavy fill or the long runs that cause the heat, but you might want to keep an eye on that.

In addition I've noticed that during routine PMs its quite common to get C380 codes when you do the stir (0.40 not 1.60). This developing unit is a little different then the Weisshorn High (eS4555C, eS5055C), in that it has a cooling duct under the developing unit that tends to fill up with developer. During the emptying process developer collects around the toner sensor, causing false readings. I've made it part of my black PM routine to pop off the duct, and remove the toner sensor. If you tap the toner sensor on the table it will drop a teaspoon of developer. Keep in mind that the foam washer that seals the sensor to the developing unit is not attached and can be easily lost. The seals and bearings are the same as the Weisshorn High and Low, but the augers, gears, and developer are different (and cannot be substituted either way ... it's been tried).

Hi, yes there are different OPCs and should be replaced with the same part number as original. I believe black drum has a double life span of the color one.
