those flag style sensors get crudded up with paper dust.

best way to clean them is with a blower brush or canned air.. a soft cloth won't cut it .

Yeah, it's the broken flag. You will not be able to MacGuyver (read: "make") a replacement flag, because of the heat emanating from the fuser. If you're lucky, a member here may have a partial fuser lying about, and volunteer the flag and spring that you need. While you're in there, replace the photointerrupter. They can crumble due to the heat. Even just touching them can cause the plastic to crumble. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

that would be great. The only problem is I need to figure out how to replace just the flag. I havenít been able to tear it down that far.

    Find a service manual.
We have a dedicated forum for such requests... oddly enough it's called 'Service Manual Requests' or something like that.

Rather than fix this machine--for the money that it would cost--we decided to just buy a new, smaller unit. Our needs don't demand such a large unit. The only reason why we had this particular unit is because it didn't cost us anything.

Thank you all for your input and advice.
