Can I re-format Toshiba hard drives for a different model?

Hello! This is probably a novice question since I work more on Xerox but I am working on a Toshiba machine with a F101 error and appears to need a new hard drive. I know I can't get a generic hard drive...but I'm able to get a Toshiba hard drive but from another model... Is this ok to do once I load the correct firmware?thanks!

Are you scrapping the e4505AC for some reason? Is this a temporary work-around? The e477s has far less value. A new Toshiba SED-HDD is worth more than the e477s.

Both the e4505AC and the e477s use a Toshiba proprietary SED-HDD.

You should not place the original SED-HDD in a 3rd party PC and try and format it there. This is bad advice.

There is a high chance that as soon as the computer boots up the SED-HDD, the Encryption key will be automatically removed and the SED-HDD will be instantly, irrevocably destroyed.

This is why the HDD is called Secure and Encrypted.

Place the SED-HDD inside the e477s and format it there. Once complete, install the firmware.

If you do not know the procedure or cannot access the firmware directly from Toshiba, I would ditch your plan.

thank you! I do have the firmware.

Agree the 4505AC is a much better machine. The hard drive is from a parts machine that I need for a contracted machine still in service.

If you have access to Toshiba's FYI tech site then search Copier Bulletin GEN-178 REV. 08 Hard Drive Part numbers per each model. Great reference. According to the part numbers the 407CS series uses a non FIPS HDD where as the 4504AC uses a FIPS so they are not compatible.

    407CS series HDD PN# G0-00732000
    5005AC series G0-00733000 (FIPS)

Yes, it does get complicated with FIPS drives

According to Wikipedia, The 140 series of Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) are U.S. government computer security standards that specify requirements for cryptography modules.

A visual inspection of the SED-HDD that you have available will not display the part #. If you see printed on the label attached to the SED-HDD, the part name MQ01ABU032W you are good to go.
