    5055C Call for Service C970

So a while back (a few months ago) I got the error code Call for Service C970. Which I looked up in the service manual as-

[C970] High-voltage transformer abnormalityHarnessClassification ContentsCopy Process related service call High-voltage transformer abnormality: Leakage of the maincharger is detected.Check Item MeasureMain charger Check if the main charger is installed securely.Spring of high-voltage supplycontact pointCheck if the spring of high-voltage supply contact point isdeformed.Needle electrode Check if the needle electrode is broken or the main chargergrid is deformed. Check if any foreign matter is on the needle electrode ormain charger grid

After doing a little digging it appeared this is most related to the drum unit. Given we have two copiers, I simply swapped the drum unit from one copier to the other to see if the error code would follow the drum unit. Which it did.

So I then to be safe, ordered a new whole drum unit. Some of this because I am not exactly sure where the specifics from the details above are and the other because I was under pressure to get things back up.

Put the new the drum unit in, everything has worked great since!

But now I am wondering can I salvage the old one? Am I over thinking this? So I thought I would ask in here to see what else I could learn.

    Any help is appreciated.

There was a bulletin about the charge corona causing the C970. The plastic around the front of the cover of the charge
corona, would not allow the frame to make proper ground connection. They changed the plastic just a bit to fix the
problem. In the field, when we didn't have the part, we just shaved off the excess area and it solved the problem.

I think he is referring to these:

There is also a change in the ends, the originals were gray, the new style ones are black.

Also common on these the Weisshorn High and Low, the seesaw (the plastic rocker that tensions both the needle electrode and grid) breaks, dropping the needle electrode onto the grid. I've replaced quite a number of these, and repaired almost as many.

The C970 is not specific to a color, so any of the four primary charge units can cause this, and it can be very intermittent. Usually, I examine all four primary charge units from gross defects, like the broken seesaw or the needle electrode twisted 90 degrees down it's length (you'd think that would be pretty obvious, but I've found it a couple times). If you can catch it in the act, the affected color drum with be blanketed with toner:

If there are no gross defects, I'll examine the test charts and focus on the color primary charge unit that is most poorly calibrated. It's you're best odds of getting the correct one. =^..^=

If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

I got so tired of replacing those, that I just gave up, drilled a tiny hole, and looped the spring through it instead of replacing them LOL.

SPC: small paper clip + a dot of two-part epoxy
Then smooth out the ends with the Dremel. =^..^=
