If your Fiery is running XP, it is the EX700 / TBA, not the EX700i / BT6.
Unusually for Xerox, for the 700/700i, any Fiery can run any 700. There are zero actual hardware differences on the 700/700i itself, other than a new sticker on the front which says 700i. Any 700 can be upgraded with the latest firmware, and the UI will then display 700/700i when it boots up, because they are the same thing.
The changes from 700 -> 700i were entirely in the Fiery. There are some new capabilities when running the jobs through the Fiery, like heavier duplex, etc. And the Fiery itself uses a completely different motherboard/processor as its base and is a lot faster.
Also, as for the Fiery's operating system, the EX700 is System 8R2 on Windows XP and the EX700i is System 10 on Windows 7. So of course you can ONLY load EX700 software on an EX700 and EX700i software on an EX700i.
But, if the newer features and faster hardware don't matter, yes, any EX700 or EX700i will work with any 700 or 700i, in any combination.
