I am a xerox technician i have worked for xerox for over 30 years and i developed an app to help identify xerox products all xerox products are identified by the first three characters of thier serial number ie a ex7123456 would be a 5855 and yet a ex9 would be a 5890 as an example. and sometimes different products use SOME different parts. it is helpful to sometimes KNOW what you are walking into ie for parts . It would be nice if something like this is also available for Canon and Ricoh machines.

do canon and ricoh also use serials as product identifiers?

Yes, the do.
