I use the Canon issued Nethawk cable.

Even though it's an official part, you have to jump through some hoops to get it to work.

I use a cheap second hand notebook equipped with parallel port as an sub to nethawk. Using SST 1XX on windows98. Ya, parallel port run at high speed mode. And if need to use network cable will just boot up windows XP. The note book is configured to dual boot. While the windows XP have sst 4xx installed.

i agree with you, but my PC don't have parallel port, and it's running on win 7, which is doesn't support parallel port anymore.

These what i can think of. Choose either one.
              1.Buy a nethawk.
2.Buy a second hand note book with parallel port, it cost only fractions of nethawk.
3.See if your friends can make a uc1284b to nethawk simulation? OK, don't take as real.
4.Use disk cloning tools if u re not intended to do any firmware upgrade, backup RAM data, etc.

                    I use a nethawk.

Although it will now be a couple of years since I used it in anger.

BUT - cant you just buy a $10 USB to Parallel adaptor and use a normal bi-centronix cable as before?

store bought USB-parallel cable will not work for SST. If you are running win 7 you have to buy the new style cable which is around $120 or so. It will auto load and configure the driver for you when you connect.

The old style needs to be manually configured and loaded.

will this ATEN USB TO PARALEL UC1284B cable support it? it's support win 7.
and only cost about $20, do you have any suggestion about the cable?

I tried the PCMCIA parallel port card some time ago, under XP.

I must have tried at least 7 or 8 different parallel cables. While they all worked for printing, not one worked for updating firmware.

No banana with the USB to parallel converter, either.

You just need to bite the bullet and get the correct Nethawk cable.
