Microsoft Corp. announced this week that it will invest $5 billion in technologies related to the Internet of Things over the next four years, with the goal of giving customers the ability to " transform their businesses ." The announcement reaffirms what some chief information officers and IT executives at enterprises are already saying: connecting devices such as elevators, factory machines and workspaces to the internet using new technologies and architectures such as edge computing will be a crucial area of investment in the near future.
