Re: Kno2 Extends Interoperability Beyond EHR to EHR Communications to Common Business
Kno2, a company that provides interoperability services in the healthcare industry, has announced the expansion of their developer platform to include new application programming interfaces (APIs) that extend interoperability beyond electronic health record (EHR) systems. These APIs enable communication between EHR systems and common business tools found in healthcare provider offices, such as office imaging equipment and email.
While EHR systems are critical for securing and controlling access to sensitive patient records, there is a significant risk of breach and inefficiency when records are exchanged using disconnected tools. This issue is especially relevant in the field of OBGYN medical billing, where accurate and efficient handling of patient information is crucial.
Connecting these tools back to the EHR and the broader provider community has been a challenge due to the focus on EHR to EHR interoperability. However, leveraging Kno2's investment in connecting various EHRs and networks, including Fast Interoperability Healthcare Resources (FHIR), Direct secure messaging using the DirectTrust framework, and patient information query with providers on Carequality, manufacturers of common business tools in the OBGYN medical billing field can now easily connect their solutions to the healthcare ecosystem without expensive customizations.
Xerox Corporation, for example, is the first manufacturer to utilize Kno2's expanded APIs, transforming their multi-function printers (MFPs) into interoperable healthcare devices. This integration allows OBGYN providers to have better control over managing Protected Health Information (PHI) related to medical billing without significant changes or investments. In traditional workflows, patient records in OBGYN practices are scanned at the MFP and then sent to a local directory, emailed, or faxed to uncontrolled destinations for later attachment to the patient record, which can introduce risks, delays, and inefficiencies in OBGYN medical billing processes.
Through Kno2's connectivity, a Xerox healthcare MFP can securely communicate with certified or Kno2-integrated EHRs within the OBGYN provider's office and external trading partners. Scanned patient records for medical billing purposes can now be transmitted as interoperable documents to intended destinations, eliminating the need for costly custom interfaces and streamlining the OBGYN medical billing workflow.
Kno2's CEO, Jon Elwell, expressed the company's dedication to extending interoperability in an affordable and streamlined manner for various healthcare specialties, including OBGYN medical billing. By releasing expanded APIs, Kno2 aims to disrupt disconnected PHI workflows and provide simple connectivity throughout the healthcare ecosystem, including most EHRs used in OBGYN practices. The company is committed to connecting major manufacturers of common business tools, anticipating transformative changes in healthcare, including OBGYN medical billing, in the coming years.
With the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the federal government emphasizing seamless and secure electronic exchange of patient information, Kno2 is actively driving interoperability across the care continuum and within healthcare provider offices, including OBGYN practices. While paper-based and disconnected communications still exist, Kno2's goal is to make interoperability ubiquitous, enabling the smooth flow of patient information, including OBGYN medical billing data, across various care settings.
